How to Receive Calls on Your iPod Touch
Last December, I was visiting my brother in San Antonio, Texas. He was working a lot those days, and we have not seen since I arrived from Italy. I was on my own, and I was supposed to call him every 30 minutes to see if he had finished the job and pick me up. To his surprise, I called him the first time and told him: "Hey, when you are ready, just call me to this number...I will answer it on my iPod Touch!" Just if you are wondering: NO, you do not need a jailbroken iPod Touch to do this! Anyway, you will need to get an external microphone to make it work.
So this was my scenario: I was in another country, and needed to keep in touch with someone else. I did not have a mobile phone, but I had an iPod Touch! Of course I need to thank the free WiFi connection at Austin's Capitol. It was the perfect place to wait for my brother's call! I had a lovely time taking the guided tour. So, let's check what you will be needing to make this work:
Create a SIP account
For my SIP account I use FreeCall. Just go to their sign up page at freecall.com and register for a free account.
Installing a SIP client
The SIP client I am using here is Fring. Fring is a mobile application that lets you make free voice calls, free video calls (one way) and live IM chats directly from your iPhone and iPod touch. You can install it for free from the iTunes Store. In your SIP client, use the username and password you created on freecall.com. For domain, use sip.freecall.com.
Get your free Phone Number
For the free number I have used ipKall. They only have 4 different area codes (do not complain...it is free!): 206, 253, 360, 425. Go to their sign up page: phone.ipkall.com and register for a free account. Here, you will need to insert again the information from freecall.com, so they can associate a number to your account. It will take some days to get the number, and once you get it, use the account! If your account remains inactive for more that 30 days will be terminated for non-use.
